The day Mom brought home the red plate from her Christian bookstore, we were all excited. It was going to be a special birthday tradition, she announced. No one was surprised. It was just like Mom to work to make others feel special. It was not unusual for her to use her best china for leftover stew when a man came to help us work on the church on Saturdays. She loved to make things lovely so that people felt special. Now that she's in heaven, I continue the red birthday plate tradition by presenting one to each of her grandchildren on their wedding day, along with a note regarding its significance. I know Mom would approve.
