Returning Home From the War

FROM: MB, Conifer, CO
We use the Red Plate for every possible celebration! We have used it for birthdays, first day of school, 1000 day birthdays, being 100% potty trained, our children asking Jesus into their hearts, riding bikes for the first time without training wheels, anniversaries, etc.

But our favorite was just last month. My husband was deployed over to the Middle East, and had a heart attack. After spending a few weeks in the hospital in Germany, I was able to airlift home with him. What a remarkable time to was to arrive home at dinnertime, on Christmas Eve!! The Red Plate has never had such a special meaning as it did that night as our four young children rejoiced over Daddy returning home from the war!!

Every Birthday A Red Plate Event

FROM: JCS, Thousand Oaks, CA
When our wonderful neighbors welcomed their second daughter, I included the following explanation of the "Red Plate" with their "Red Plate" gift.

"The Red Plate" is a tradition in our home. Having had five children, we wanted each child to feel special at various times. If one of them got an "A" on a test, he/she would have dinner on the "Red Plate." Every birthday was a "Red Plate" event. The "Red Plate" was always available for a great try in a sporting event, helping a sibling unselfishly, an award from school, going above and beyond what was expected of them, receiving a letter of acceptance from a college, a visit home from college or the Navy, a job promotion, a wedding, a new baby, etc.

It is our pleasure to pass this wonderful tradition of the "Red Plate" onto your family in celebration of the birth of your beautiful daughter."

They were thrilled to begin the same tradition for their family.

Keep the Family Solid

FROM: BJR, Portage, MI
Letting our loved ones know that they are special is the best gift we can give each other. In the busy world we live in, and taking into consideration the statistics of successful marriages and family time together, showing this special love is even more important. That is why as a wedding gift I give the Red Plate.

I hope that it can continue or start a tradition in these couples and their future children that helps keep "the family" solid by remembering how special they are.

A Self-Esteem Dream

FROM: CA
My first introduction to the Red Plate was when I was teaching pre-school. One of the parents brought a Red Plate in so that her child could use it for her birthday treat. All of the parents and I went crazy for it. It has been a huge part of all of our family's celebrations ever since and a must-buy for showers, weddings, and new babies. The celebration would not be complete without the Red Plate. It's a self-esteem dream.

Mom Made Others Feel Special

FROM: JB, Piedmont, SD
The day Mom brought home the red plate from her Christian bookstore, we were all excited. It was going to be a special birthday tradition, she announced. No one was surprised. It was just like Mom to work to make others feel special. It was not unusual for her to use her best china for leftover stew when a man came to help us work on the church on Saturdays. She loved to make things lovely so that people felt special. Now that she's in heaven, I continue the red birthday plate tradition by presenting one to each of her grandchildren on their wedding day, along with a note regarding its significance. I know Mom would approve.

Extended Family Life

FROM: SCI, Hancock NH
As a family child care provider in my home, our red plate has been shared with those children whom I care for, those who I love as my own, during their early years in my care. Their birthdays are acknowledged, the births of siblings, loss of first tooth, riding a 2-wheeler, etc. just as they were for my (now) teens. The Red Plate has become such a tradition in my preschool care program that, as a parting gift to my most recent children, moving on to public school, each was given their own Red Plate to introduce in their immediate families and carry into the future.

It Just Doesn't Seem Like a Birthday

FROM: JLP, Raleigh, NC
I don't really remember a time when Mom didn't have her Red Plate. She pulled it out for every birthday, graduation or special occasion. My brothers and I are all grown and on our own but we get together almost every Sunday as a family for dinner. Of course, the red plate doesn't come out every week, but it just doesn't seem like a birthday without the red plate. We all look forward to our special days when we can eat off of the special plate. And now that we are all grown, we each have our own red plate that we can use within our own families and carry on the tradition!

The "Magic of the Red Plate"

BY: Generalist
It was a time honored tradition among early American families that when someone deserved special praise or attention they were served dinner on the red plate. Today, this custom, so dear to early American families, returns to remind us that a simple reward can mean so much. The Red Plate is the perfect way to acknowledge a family member's special triumphs...celebrate a birthday...praise a job well done...reward a goal achieved...or simply say "You Are Special Today." When the Red Plate is used, any meal becomes a celebration honoring that special person, event or deed. It is a visible reminder of love and esteem. This is a way of showing someone dear to you that they are appreciated and remembered. The Red Plate is designed and crafted to become a family heirloom as it is cherished and passed from one generation to the next marking life's important milestones. The Red Plate...Make it a tradition in your family, symbolizing the good and happy times. It will speak volumes of love, when words just aren't enough.
