13th Birthday with 8 Friends

FROM: SEM, Gladstone MO
My mom has had the plate in our family for over 25 years. Whenever there has been a important event in our families life we get to use the "RED PLATE". I have gotten to use it for many Milestone Birthdays but I remember waking up after a slumber party for my 13th birthday, and all 8 of my friends coming down for breakfast and there sitting on the table was the RED PLATE. It allowed me to feel special and to share the story of the plate. Now everytime we get it out, we can read all the memories on the back and smile fondly. I plan to purchase a red plate for my best friends wedding and start the tradition again.

Our Plate is Filling with Special Occasions

FROM: JS, Coopersburg PA
I came across the red plate in a gift shop while vacationing with my Aunt and Sister. It seemed like the perfect thing to start out my relationship with my boyfriend (now my husband). We had just started dating and just got our first apartment together. It is now five years later, and our plate is filling with special occasions such as our marriage, getting a new job, the birth of our son. I can't wait to fill the plate with more special occasions. The plate is displayed in our kitchen.

A few months ago, my best friend got married and I knew that the red plate would be a special gift for her, too. So, I gave her one and wrote her a note of how much we loved our plate and can't wait until she can see how many good things will happen in her life and that her plate will fill with all those good times.

The Best Baby Shower Gift Ever!

FROM: NK, Rockledge, FL
I received my first RED Plate at my 1st baby shower. I'd never heard of it, and the person that gave it to me told me how it was used at special times in her house of 3 children. The way she talked about it really touched me and made me want to start my own tradition. I didn't use it 'till 5 years later, for my daughter's 5 yr birthday-that qualified as a special day!

I now have 2 children and I've used it for good report cards, birthdays, work promotions, etc..., not just for the kids, but for adults too. Every time it comes out, it brings a smile to whoever gets to use it that day. I've bought a couple more to give to them when they are older. To this day, I can say, that was the best baby shower gift ever!

Across Four Continents

FROM: SHB, Los Gatos CA
I am one of nine children, growing up in South Africa. We did not have a lot of money for birthday gifts but we were always made to feel special on holidays and birthdays. The red plate has been a family tradition for many years and now as adults scattered across the globe on four continents, we continue this red plate tradition with our own families.

Focusing on the Simple Joys of Life

FROM: DAS, Jacksonville, FL
Growing up, my family always had a "Red Plate" to recognize a member of our family for a special accomplishment. It was always just another way to celebrate our time together at the dinner table. Now as a parent with small children, we have continued the tradition. By focusing on the simple joys of life, we have found our nightly dinners at the table to be the cornerstone of our family, which none of us take for granted. Having the privilege to eat off of the "Red Plate" serves not only as a motivator for our children to do good in school. Sometimes maybe too good, since it also serves as a source of sibling rivalry when they both do well (we haven't bought a 2nd "Red Plate" yet).

So Important We Can't Remember

FROM: BJM, Grundy Center, IA
Through the twenty-five years our family has had the red plate, we have used the plate for events that are special to individuals in our family, and not just for the traditional birthday and anniversary events.

Just the other day we were celebrating the engagement of our daughter Elizabeth and reminiscing with her about other times we have enjoyed the use of the plate. Elizabeth, my husband and I were all able to recall a day back in 5th grade when she came home from school and announced that she wanted the plate for supper that night, but that we would have to wait for supper for her to tell us the reason. Ironically, while we could all remember that part of the story, none of us could remember what reason she gave at dinner.

At the time it was of monumental importance, but years later we couldn't remember if it was a special award she was given, an event she was chosen to attend, or maybe beating all the girls in her class in a track meet. I know the plate was enjoyed for all those occasions. We use it celebrate little successes as well as huge accomplishments. We like our plate so much that we have given it as gifts for graduations, hoping that others will use and enjoy the plate as much as our family.

Always an Excited Response

FROM: RE
The first red plate I encountered was as wedding gift 25 years ago from a dear friend. We have used it all these blessed years together and commemorate not only our special days, but now those of our children. There is always an excited responce to the recipient of the special attention. This past year on my son's 17th birthday, the red plate was out for his at his party, and our church youth minister was here to celebrate. Her heartfelt reaction to the plate was obvious and it reminded me of my first encounter with it. I had ben pondering what to get her as a wedding present the following month, and the answer was clear. When she recieved it amongst all her other wedding gifts, I was the first to get a immediate phone call of excitement and appreciation. May it bless her marriage and famly as it has mine.

Breakfast on the Red Plate

BY: Generalist
Breakfast, they say, is the most important meal of the day. And this post of a great looking breakfast presented on a "You Are Special Plate" is destined to make dieters decide to skip the grapefruit and go for the meat and eggs! I could be happy with a breakfast like that. Fat, but happy!

Celebrating My Effort

FROM: EC, IL
After 16 years of being a stay-at-home mom, I took the leap and went back to college. It was a challenge for me, my husband, and my kids as we juggled our already hectic schedules. After the first year of classes, I had to submit work for review in order to be accepted into my desired major. Preparing for that review was stressful. The day I turned in my work for review, I returned home and found the “you are special today” plate at my place. My family was celebrating my effort even though we did not know what the outcome would be. I was touched. The following week was cause for a second celebration as I had passed the review and was accepted.
